Aluminium heritage windows: Classic style, modern performance

Aluminium heritage windows and doors give you the steel-look aesthetic of a period property with none of the downsides of actual steel. No rust. No rot. Far better thermal performance.
If you want to know whether they work for your home – period renovation or new build – the short answer is yes. Here is everything you need to decide.
What are aluminium heritage windows?
Heritage-style aluminium windows are designed to replicate the slim, industrial sightlines of original steel frames, popular in Art Deco and Modernist architecture from the early 20th century.
At a glance, they look like classic steel-framed windows, but they are crafted in aluminium, offering the same slender sightlines and elegant profiles with the modern advantages of better insulation, lighter weight, and lower maintenance.
Unlike steel predecessors, aluminium is highly durable, energy-efficient, and fully recyclable.
That combination is why architects, planners, and homeowners across Hertfordshire and North London are specifying them in growing numbers.
Why homeowners and architects are choosing them
Period character and planning approval in one product
Alitherm Heritage windows are specifically designed for heritage and refurbishment projects, including listed building renovations. They offer a modern, energy-efficient solution while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the building. Where the requirement to replace old steel windows is essential, they are the perfect choice.
New-build appeal too. The steel-look frame is one of the UK’s biggest home design trends right now. They are perfect for Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco styles, providing a contemporary alternative to traditional steel windows and doors.

The Smart Alitherm Heritage range
At E&A Windows, we supply and install the Smart Alitherm Heritage system – one of the most specified aluminium heritage window ranges in the UK.
Taking inspiration from traditional steel windows, Alitherm Heritage features signature slim sightlines and attractive aesthetic contours coupled with polyamide thermal break technology, providing improved thermal performance and narrow sightlines.
Configuration options
The system is available as side-hung, top-hung, fixed, or tilt and turn, including a heavy duty vent option.
Fixed light panels can be combined with openable sashes to create large multi-module windows – the window is designed to be built as a series of horizontal modules which can be stacked using horizontal couplers to form a multi-part window featuring a specially designed drip bar between modules.
Thermal performance
Alitherm Heritage profiles utilise Smart’s polyamide thermal break technology, which creates a barrier between the cold air outside and the warm air inside. This significantly reduces thermal transmittance and improves the overall U-value, designed to meet the exacting requirements of Document L.
Security
The Alitherm Heritage series has been tested to PAS 24:2016 for casement windows and fixed lights, ensuring high levels of security. The system also includes options for 316 marine grade stainless steel hardware in heritage or Art Deco styles, combining beautiful aesthetics with robust security features.
Glazing flexibility
Alitherm Heritage windows can accommodate a range of glazing options, including double and triple glazing, as well as obscure, laminated, and toughened glass. The glazing thickness ranges from 24mm to 36mm, depending on the specific design and requirements.

The AluK heritage range
E&A Windows also installs the AluK 58BW heritage window system.
The AluK Heritage aluminium range captures the essence of traditional steel doors, combining classic aesthetics with modern functionality without the drawbacks of rust and single glazing. Designed to replace old steel doors, this system is slim, sturdy, and thermally efficient.
Shared profiles, beads, and ancillaries across the AluK range offer a full heritage range of windows and doors with less stock-holding and simple fabrication. This means your windows and heritage doors match precisely – sightlines, bead details, and sight depths align across the entire opening.
Colour options and finishes
You are not limited to black or anthracite.
Alitherm Heritage products are available in a choice of standard or non-standard colours, including metallic, dual colour, Smart’s Sensations textured, and Alchemy anodised effect finishes.
Dual colour options let you choose a different shade for the inside face than the outside – a popular choice when internal décor does not match the external facade colour.
Are aluminium heritage windows right for a listed building?
Yes – provided the specification is correct.
The Alitherm Heritage aluminium windows collection has been designed to offer a perfect replacement for old windows in traditional buildings, where aesthetics and efficiency are the priority. With slim sightlines and attractive contours, the Alitherm Heritage is a like-for-like replacement for conservation areas.
Planning officers increasingly accept aluminium heritage systems as a sympathetic replacement for steel because the visual result is near-identical. That said, you should always confirm with your local authority before ordering. E&A Windows can provide full technical specifications to support your planning application – just ask when you get in touch.
