Broken Door Lock Mechanism: How to Open Your uPVC Door

If you can’t open or close your uPVC door properly because of a broken lock, it’s far from ideal.
But aside from the huge inconvenience of not being able to get in and out of your home easily, it also presents a security risk as well as a potential fire safety hazard.
If your uPVC door has a broken lock, you really should address it as soon as possible.
Depending on the nature of the problem, you may be able to quickly carry out the repair yourself.
Identifying the problem
First, you need to determine whether it is the barrel, or the mechanism that is causing the issue. To do this, put your key in the lock and turn it to lock or unlock it as you normally would.
If the key turns and the lock clicks as usual, the issue is with the mechanism and not the barrel. If the key does not turn or there is some resistance, the issue is with your barrel and is reasonably easy to fix.
Check the handle
Check the door handle to see if it is loose. If it is, then locate the screw that holds the barrel into place. Tighten it to hold the barrel more securely, this should effectively tighten the handle and fix the problem.
Replacing the mechanism
If the key does turn in the lock, the issue lies with your mechanism, which you will need to replace.
Every door has its own unique gearbox, so it’s important to purchase the right mechanism for your door.
Replacing it is also no small task and, if done incorrectly, could damage your door further. If you are unsure of how to do this, it would be worth contacting a professional to get them to replace the mechanism for you.
